Healing Historic Trauma Through Ancestral Atonement by Rev. Juan Carlos Areán

In November 2016, Juan Carlos was called to be part of a powerful spontaneous sacred ceremony in Teotihuacán, Mexico. A series of synchronicities guided him to ask for forgiveness for the historical atrocities committed by his people (the Spanish) upon the Aztecs and their land. He will share the story of how he ended up kneeling in front of a real Aztec warrior/dancer, surrounded by a circle of Mexican and American fellow spiritual travelers and the repercussions that this act has had in his life. Based on this experience (which has been happening in other settings, including at Standing Rock), Juan Carlos will lead participants in ritual, meditation and circle discussion on how atonement and forgiveness can help heal historical and personal trauma.

In light of all the news breaking about men’s sexual assault and harassment of women - from Hollywood to the senate to professional sports, our December Men’s Roundtable will focus on sexual assault. Though we see epidemic levels of violence against women, why is it not considered a hate crime? Why does it matter?
