Understanding Child Sexual Abuse

Understanding Child Sexual Abuse is an interactive workshop with therapist and social worker, Flora Colao that focuses on the therapeutic care of children and adolescents who have been victimized, including the signs and symptoms of abuse, short and long term affects of victimization and intervention strategies that work.  This will be a participatory workshop covering the following topics:

  •      Defining child sexual abuse
  •      Dimensions of the problem
  •      A child’s perspective
  •      Signs and symptoms of abuse
  •      Medical and Legal issues
  •      Immediate intervention strategies
  •      Helping Children Cope with the Aftermath

Participants are encouraged to bring questions regarding any situations that they would like help in resolving.  Issues of multiple traumas as well as the specific issues confronting parents and guardians will be emphasized through the workshop. In addition, the differing needs of children at different stages of development as well as the issues confronting males and females will be covered.  The workshop is located at 3 W 29th Street, New York 9th Floor Conference Room

Flora Colao, LCSW is a social worker and therapist who has been treating children and families since 1975. She specializes in the treatment of child abuse and trauma and offers training programs throughout the United States. Flora has extensive experience working with children who have been traumatized as a result of violence either against themselves or against a loved one. She uses play
and art expression in addition to talk therapy with children. Flora is EMDR trained since 2001 and has 2 years experience integrating EMDR into treatment with trauma survivors. Flora Colao is the co-author of the book Your Children Should Know (Harper and Row 1987).
